Church Building

In 1994, retired Holley Standard reporter, Winifred Bentley, took on the challenge of chronicling the history of our church building and its congregation. It was an exciting process, and the resulting book is available at the Church. The following is a summary of some of the main events.

As early as the 1860's, Episcopalians from St. Luke's Church in Brockport were attempting to establish a congregation in Holley, New York. In 1891, a mission was established, and 25 people were confirmed into the new, yet unnamed, congregation. As it was St. Paul's Day, the presiding Bishop suggested the church be called St. Paul's Church. The first church warden, Charles C. Hayden, was the owner and editor of the Holley Standard newspaper. On May 24, 1894, the mission was incorporated as a parish, and construction was begun on an Early Gothic-style building designed by Addison Forbes of Rochester. Due to uneven ground, the church was built with flying buttresses, and remains the only church in Orleans County with that feature. The first service was held January 20, 1895 by Reverend Burrows.
